George Kell

The "other" voice of spring has passed. George Kell, longtime Tigers announcer, died yesterday. He was 86.

He started off his telecasts (that's what they were called) with his signature, "Good afternoon, Tiger fans. We're coming to you from sunny ... "

A great memory I have of him and Al was in the late 80s. They were telecasting from Fenway Park in Boston, with the 38 foot wall.

"Al, it's hard to believe that Monster in left field is seven stories tall, isn't it?"

I was shocked.

The wall was maybe four stories.

But the conversation lasted several minutes between the legends.
