APPLE 1.0
In the years before Amazon.com and bn.com, there was Book Mark in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. I "discovered" Book Mark when I was a freshman at Central Michigan University in 1990. It was located right next to Wherehouse Records, an independent music store.
The Book Mark displays books, not necessarily by current popularity or the New York Times book lists. One book I noticed today, by Chris Epting, was Led Zeppelin Crashed Here. It's a book about popular music locations in the United States. The book seemed interesting, so instead of buying it, I came home and checked the book out on Amazon. I found that Epting has an Amazon blog, a Web site, and has already written several books.
He even has a flickr account. You can click on the house that Steve Jobs lived in when he and his partner created Apple Computers in the 1970s and see all kinds of cool photos he's taken on his travels.
The Book Mark, an old school, independent book store in a technologically aggressive market. I picked up a copy of today's Grand Rapids Press. For $2.00. No wonder the industry is struggling ...
