A good conversation with Mr. Dombrowski

Mr. D,

I don't know if you're listening or even want any feedback, but it's been a disappointing season to be a diehard Detroit Tiger fan. Very disappointing!

You might want to think about these factors:

1. Fernando Rodney is not closer material and never was. Todd Jones makes me more comfortable in the ninth inning than Rodney. Rodney also can turn a quick game into a LONG game.

2. Chuck Hernandez has to be let go after the season. Look at how the Tampa Rays' (ne' Devil) pitching improved after they let him go. The Tigers have had too many unique injuries for it to be a coincidence. Something in strength training or pitching teaching is awry. Hernandez needs to go. Especially when Leo Mazzone (the one from the Braves not Orioles!) is available.

3. Jim Leyland is still a solid manager. I will continue to be patient with him — as long as he becomes LESS patient with the Tigers.

4. Let Gary Sheffield go home for the rest of the summer, rest up, and use the clear ala Barry Bonds. He'll come back next year and go on a tear.

5. Nate "Dog" Robertson — he's paid well and he's worthless. Better than the guy he was traded from the Marlins for, though. He shows signs of being a decent fifth starter and then acts like he can't be relied on for mop up duty.

6. Nice gesture to let Jones walk away with dignity.

7. Edgar Renteria — maybe next year? Or do the Cardinals really want him back?

8. Hey, I like the Farnsworth move. The Rays are just good. Darn good.

9. What really happened with Bobby Higginson?

10. Anybody in mind to replace Jimmy when he retires? I still think it's going to be Lou Pinella's bench coach. Funny feeling there. You know.

Thanks for listening!
