Shortstop of the future???

Michael Hollimon has impressed the Tigers.

As much as I liked the Tigers trade for Edgar Renteria (hey, he hit .332 for the Braves last season), I know can see why the Braves would deal him away for prospects (albeit good prospects ...). His range is nonexistent and his bat is slow. Apparently, he's an "old" 32 or he just doesn't do well in the American League (see Red Sox, 2005). He had quite a pricey "option" for the 2009 season, and despite the fact that the Tigers gave up an All–star in Jair Jurrjens, I would expect that they're prepping Michael Hollimon to be next year's starting shortstop. Hollimon seems to have a little bit of power, some speed, and a decent glove. He would certainly be cheaper than Renteria.

Anyway, my point is that the Tigers are outplayed by teams like the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Rays. You watch their players hustle and take the extra base — not to mention play aggressive ball ... The Tigers are like the old Baltimore Earl Weaver Orioles in that they wait for the three–run homer, which doesn't always arrive.

No, the season is not over yet, but the Twins and Rays are fun teams to watch. And, the youngsters on the Tigers like Hollimon, Clete Thomas, and Matt Joyce give hope for a more aggressive future. They can rally, they can move forward. But, it's not the White Sox or Indians they have to look out for, it's those darn Minnesota Twins!
