Too Early To Tell

A seven or ten game losing streak in July might go unnoticed by the casual observer. Starting the season without a win for a week or more ... that's going to gain national attention. Starting the season without a win for a week or more when you're supposed to be a team that could score 1,000 runs and should contend for a Pennant ... THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT.

The Tigers are off to a bad start.

The Tigers are off to a lousy start.

The Tigers are off to a terrible start.

The Tigers are ... off to see the wizard.

Can it get any worse? I suppose it could.

Baseball is a marathon season. Sparky Anderson, a manager I despised when he managed the Tigers but one I grew to appreciate when Bubby Bell arrived, once said something like, "You ain't gonna know nothin' until the 40th game." He believed the 40 game mark helped to outline the season. Well, the '84 team (reference to a classic Tigers team totally unnecessary, I know) won 35 or their first 40.

I'm holding out hope that they can turn this around, but maybe they're a collection of STARS rather than a TEAM.

That's all I'll say for tonight.

Good night. And, Jim, "Good luck."
