Jayson Stark Watching the Tigers in Tigertown
• STRIKE ONE: Miguel Cabrera did something in batting practice the other day that longtime Tigers observers said they'd never seen: Mash two straight BP home runs that soared not just over the fence, but came down on the other side of Granada Street, the road that runs behind the Tigertown practice fields.
"We've had a lot of good hitters here," said GM Dave Dombrowski, after watching Cabrera's second Space Shuttle launch disappear into the distance. "But I've never seen anybody hit a ball over that road."
Pretty cool first impression. But here's what separates Cabrera from your other rocket launchers in this sport: In his first round of BP, all he did was hit line drives to right field. In his second round, he hit balls up the middle. In his third, he hit ropes to left. And only in his fourth did he do his NASA impression. Amazing.
