Addiction
A Weblog that I think is good is called The Simple Dollar. While it has some great financial posts and ideas, one of the most thought–inducing is one about sodahttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif pop/cola. The demon that grabs a hold of me once in a while is Mountain Dew. (Incidentally, you should check out the wild history of Mountain Dew sometime at Wikipedia.)
Anyhow, is great. It's about the DIRECT and INDIRECT cost of soda consumption.
The direct costs are obviously buying the soda. You may think you're doing well buying it at Sam's Club or Meijer or Piggly Wiggly (wherever!) on sale. But, if you drink a lot of soda, you'll be buying a lot of soda. The bulk buying doesn't even take into consideration when you are eating out at McDonald's or Ruby Tuesday or wherever and you purchase a soda. Or, maybe you're in line at a discount store and decide to purchase one from the cooler. It adds up. The highlight of the article, though, are the indirect costs.
•obesity
•tooth decay
•bone weakening,
•caffeine dependence.
All are real concerns with soda.
How does one quit his/her soda addiction?
The article suggests quitting on a Friday so you have the week–end for your headache. And, when you crave a soda, drink a water. A glass of filtered water from your fridge or a Brita™ or other source — NOT bottled water.
