Leyland, Leyland, Leyland
Go, Ryan, Go!
Anyone who knows me is aware that I believe in Jim Leyland. I think he is an excellent manager. In 2006, it seemed that everything he did turned out right—usually it did. In '07, many times he has done questionable things, but since I'm just a fan, what do I really know.
My sportswriter friend who also dabbles in rock & roll, Steven Douglas Losey called during last night's game. It was at a time that the Devil Rays had scored a run or two and taken the lead. Losey said, "I just don't think they're going to win this game. You know, I'm really wondering about Leyland lately." I wanted to defend Jimmy, but I didn't. I couldn't. He has done some dumb things.
Tonight took the cake: taking out a starting pitcher who had a great game going. Nate Robertson pitched 7.2 innings and threw only 96 pitches. Now, the boys picked up Grilli in the bottom of the eighth, but it shouldn't have happened. Leyland never should have removed Robertson in the situation.
Grilli has scared me since the playoffs last year. Actually, it was the clinching game against the Athletics and it was late. Grilli came in, got two quick outs, then proceeded to walk the bases loaded. He has totally gone down hill since then. Has he reached the bottom of the hill?
The above illustration is presented to Mr. Robertson. It is created in jest. Please don't take offense.
