The Pennant Race
Wow!
That's about all I can say to describe my experience that began at 5:30 Friday afternoon.
Ken and I arrived at the Detroit Cab Company to park and head the few blocks to the Tigers game. They were hosting the vaunted New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. The Tigers welcomed the Yankees into town and then turned into nasty hosts.
"Being there" in Comerica Park during these two games is something difficult to describe. Loud, loud, and louder! The stadium was incredible. The fans unbelievable. It truly was Detroit Rock City. We were all there for one reason ... to see the Tigers win! And they did. Shocking the whole country. Destroying the Yankees. Getting the Yankees manager fired. You know that I am a "be there" person. I've watched many celebrations on television and said, "Wow! I wish I could be there."
I was there last night. I was still there when nobody would leave. The players returned to the field. They were excited. They were great for the fans. They doused the crowd with champagne. They were having a great time. They were slapping fives. Heck, I even slapped fives with announcer John Keating, assistant trainer Steve Carter, and several other people who headed into the tunnel to the clubhouse.
Some other highlights: hanging out with writer Steven Losey for most of the two games, meeting Uncle Kracker who just happened to be at the game, seeing the Bonderman family rooting on Jeremy yesterday. It was an experience that I only hope I can live again next week-end, when the Athletics come to town.
This season has been unbelievable!
