And Ken Gets Credited with a Winner

Steven D. Losey ... well, you know the story by now. Anyway, he's still covering the Tigers for the Free Press and today's article is pretty cool. I'll let him tell the story because the people I already told a similar story to just looked at me and smiled and nodded their heads, "Uh-huh. Sure." Well, you can check it out live at the Web site or right here below ...

Saturday Sing-a-long at the Park

By Steven D. Losey, Detroit Free Press

Monday I called out Detroit celebrities. I've gotten more e-mails on that subject. Some were berating me, most thanking me, while others offered more names. I officially call out Tom Selleck, Tim Allen, Chad Smith (Chili Pepper), Tommy Hearns and Diana Ross.

As I sat in the stands Saturday, Jeremy Bonderman had set down the Yankees 1-2-3 in the first. I leaned forward and told Garret and Mike from Bay City that Bonderman would no-hit through five. Much like I get certain vibes for music, I had that same vibe about Bonderman, and that's what happened.

Something else occurred that I thought was really cool. I was standing there with Ken from Mt. Pleasant and Rick from Vestaburg. There were three of us, among 43,126 delirious fans. It was the ninth inning when to my left Ken starts singing, "Na, na, na, na ... na, na, na, na ... hey, hey, hey, good-bye." I thought, "Perfect timing, Ken!" So then I started singing and Rick started singing. About 10 or 11 seconds in, something started to sound really unusual. At that moment I stopped and heard the sound of at least 20,000 people singing the song. I couldn't believe it had spread that quickly and I was pumped to have been part of it. (I won't tell you that Posada then hit a home run to kill that moment.)

Being a fan is special around here. I have three sons, Josh, 20, Justin, 16, and Nicholas, 14. They have never experienced this and it makes the taste even sweeter. This year it's everything like rushing home to catch the Tigers game, wearing the Olde English D, defending your favorite player and actually caring about baseball. The Detroit Tigers have delivered the goods in 2006, and all of us lifelong fans are thankful!
