Uncle John and Dad

Uncle John and Dad

It was Sept. 23, 2005, when my Grandpa and I attended our last Tigers game together. The Tigers lost that night to the Seattle Mariners, but Grandpa and I had a great time. We had a soda at Leo's Coney Dog right by the stadium before the game, then we relaxed and enjoyed a pretty good game. Remember, it was in 2005, so the expectations by September were pretty low. Grandpa had received vouchers for tickets from some folks at his 90th birthday party on August 3. After the game, we talked about Alan Trammell's certain fate and how disappointing it was that the heroes from 1984 couldn't get the job done.

Grandpa passed away last October. But we all know that he's watching this season and smiling!

Early in the summer, I decided I would start myself a new tradition. I would either attend a home Tigers game on Sept. 23 each year, or the nearest home date. This year it fell on Sept. 23. I asked my Uncle John and Dad to go to the game. We had a great time. We sat in section 137, row 12. The seats were great and the Tigers ... they won!

Thanks, Uncle John and Dad, for going to the game.

Editor's Note: thanks also to Ken, who went to the game. We'll be going to a few more games in the coming weeks. Interestingly, two of the tickets I have for the first game in Detroit: section 137, row 21. I think it's a number thing. Like when Sean Casey arrived, his first night in uniform he wore number 12. The next night, it was 21. I think Sean Casey may have a huge post season! It's all in the numbers, right?

Go, Tigers. Eat 'em up!!!
