Vision, rules, deadlines

Give people a vision, rules about how to get there, and deadlines.

This is part of one of Marissa Mayer's "Nine Notions of Innovation." I briefly read about Mayer in a Business Week article. I found on DIGG, a mention of "How to run a meeting like Google."

I was intrigued by the topic, so I looked at it. It led to a free Internet slide show. Eventually, I encountered, "Give people a vision, rules about how to get there, and deadlines ..." Quite a good, innovative, common sense thought, really.

All of the thoughts, beginning with having an agenda are IMPORTANT!

The message:

1. Give people a vision.
2. Give people rules about how to get there.
3. Give people deadlines.

What do you think? Can it apply to education?

No Child Left Behind = vision (everyone is "proficient" by 2013) + rules (make ayp or "else") + deadline (should be "deadlines"--cause there would be the big deadline (2013) and the little ones (ayp-related!)

Certainly the message CAN apply to education...however I think that another thing Google does is "have fun" and "experiment" which sounds great, but we also need to remember that kids are KIDS...not rats!
You said that it is a "common sense though, really"...and that is true, IF we all remember to use common sense when working through the agenda, and be able to be flexible and to be able to think through some contingencies, given the diverse students and situations we serve.
Ok, that's enough higher-level thought for my brain tonight...I can't believe I actually pulled that out right now--and it is a Sunday! Ugh!
