Culture is what happens between meetings

Dr. Michael Fullan

I'm sitting in Lansing, Michigan, at the Lansing Center right now listening to educational leader Michael Fullan talk about LEADERSHIP FOR COHERENCE & DEEP LEARNING.

A renown leader/speaker like Fullan is best seen live. Sure you can read his PDFs and grasp what the presentation might be like, but to be able to hear him, see the slides, and for him to share the stories behind the slides is excellent.

Some takeaways from the day, so far:

  • Young people are the best change agents
  • Nuance leadership is hard to define because of the topic itself.
  • Extrinsic motivators don't work. People need a sense of purpose. Fullan credited Daniel Pink and his work in the book Drive.
  • Connectedness — humans are wired to connect.
  • "Culture is what happens in between meetings."
  • Clarity.
Culture is what happens in between meetings. Those seven words say a lot and set the table for some great conversation. How do you create culture? Does it really happen in the in–between? Thought–provoking.
