Closing Day, 2000

Is that the dude who shouted, "Here's Johnny!" ?

When the Tigers were a struggling team in the early 2000's we only made it down to a few games every summer — okay, so not much changes, win or lose — but when Comerica Park opened in 2000, we didn't make it down until October. The first day of October was the last day of the season for the Tigers, who finished 79–83 (boy, that sounded great then!)

As the Tigers scored two runs in the ninth, it must have been a walk–off win. For some reason I don't remember that fact. The highlight if there really was one was that Shane Halter played all nine positions (that's what it used to be like in the D) and Dean Palmer made two errors to finish with 25 on the season. I hope this link works because I tried to make the photo small enough — the game was more like a Spring Training game as so many players played.

No, the fellow isn' t Jack Nicholson, though he talks and looks a lot like him. We used to see him at games all the time, but I can't say I've seen him in the last couple of seasons. Back in 2000, a near .500 record seemed great … struggling as a .500 team with a high payroll, isn't.
