You Don't Need a Vision, You Need Action

I wrote to one of my favorite authors the other day. Seth Godin inspired me to be a blogger. Beyond his blog, though, he is an incredible writer and presenter. I saw him in Ann Arbor a couple of years ago. He was talking about his latest book, The Dip. He writes a new book, usually about marketing or leadership, nearly every year. His books always make you think, and are sometimes a "call to action."

I respect his thoughts. I believe in what he has to say. So I wrote him a short message about our school's "vision" discussions.

Within a few minutes, he replied. This is what he said:

"You don't need a vision, Rick; you need a burn down this building mission that changes everything. Anything else is just stalling. If you didn't have a status quo and wanted to create a 12–year experience that changed kids lives for the better, forever, what would you do? Do that!"

I would propose an idea like this:

"Our school's promise is that we will change kids lives for the better, forever."

How's that for a promise?

talk is cheap...that is all that is heard around certain schools...talk, talk, talk....if i am not mistaken a certain DSIT committe sat around all night tuesday and talked about a vision....talk talk talk....until schools are held accountable for their actions, and until certain districts stop talking and start making decisions, nothing is going to change...winners make decisions, losers form committees.....how many committees are their at certain school districts????????? talk is cheap, actions speak louder than words
