Gibby Should Be Tabbed to Run Mets Mess

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of Kirk Gibson. He played the game of baseball the way it should be played: to win. I realize and understand that the players in Detroit didn't respect him and some called him "Two Swings" for two famous swings from his career.

From what I have read in Arizona, however, the players love him. He makes things work and teaches the game. He is one of the reasons the young D'backs have won the West, according to an article I recently read. I don't think he should return to the D'backs in '08, though. I think he's perfect for what ails the New York Metropolitans.

If you haven't heard, they lost a seven–game lead with 17 games to go in this season. A loss today and a Phillies win meant the end of the season for the Mets — who, incidentally, had led the East since May 15. Ouch! Willie Randolph is probably a goner. And the perfect choice to replace him as the Billy Martin–esque Gibby. I don't think he's a longterm solution as a Major League Manager. I think his no–holds barred approach to the game probably wears thin quickly.

Having said that, the Mets are on the cusp of winning. They should have won this year. A splash like bringing in the brash Gibson and signing his best friend (David "Boomer" Wells) to pitch would be a start. I guarantee the Mets would play with much more passion in '08. I'd like to see it happen. His style is what the New Yorkers need.
