Smile while you work

You never know when you'll end up on a blog!

Education is a great career. It is quite rewarding. Ever since I entered the field, negative people who seem to (dislike) kids drive me crazy. There was more than one time in my early days as a teacher when I would enter the lounge and listen to some veteran teachers just saying mean things about kids and I always wanted to say, "When did you become this way?"

I often have wondered if there is a point that a teacher reaches where they decide, "I'm going to love the rest of my career" or "I'm going to be miserable the rest of my career and so will all of my students ..."

A bright smiling face, though, shows that you love what you're doing. There's nothing better than smiles from teachers and students to help set the tone for the day!

It's almost November, and I'm still smiling.... I was having a discussion with a (non-teacher) friend the other day, and he said he thought schools would try to put teachers on a time-clock. I laughed in his face, but I figured out today that when you take the average amount of time I spend on work and divide that with my pathetic first-year-teacher salary (net) for one week, I'm currently making $8.25 an hour. I must love my job, there's no other explanation.

One thing I think that we all need to remember is that it may seem as if certain teachers don't like kids, however I don't think that is the case at all. I believe that it is more of a frustration with both the system and parents, an unfortunate position for the kids to be in. The system wants us to reach impossible expectations that aren't even developmentally appropriate and parents either don't want to take the time to help there children at home, don't know how to help them or don't believe that their child needs any extra help. Of course I don't truly believe that all parents are this way and it's not that they don't care, they are just uneducated about education. I guess that is just one more thing that falls on the teachers shoulders, we now have to not only educate the children but the parents too.
My hope is that one day we can stop blaming each other and just do what is best for kids. I don't think this will happen though until the public has a "real" understanding of education.
Sure every school needs to improve, but schools and teachers overall are doing a great job. It's the people at the state and federal level making decisions on curriculum that they aren't even educated in that are screwing us and them up.
