Taking the Stairs to October

I just read an article the other day that the Tigers need somebody to come in and help carry them to the playoffs. It said that in 1972, the Tigers brought aboard Frank Howard, who had a great few weeks. He arrived too late to be on the postseason roster but helped the team get there and cheered them on in the playoffs against the A's.

How cool would it be for Matt Stairs to get some solid at bats, maybe one or two hits that help the team win a game and then he is able to cheer the team on against the Oakland Athletics? You know, '72 was a great season -- especially for this fan who wasn't even one-year-old during the season ... I remember the pennant races in '81, '82, '83, and especially '84. The best one, though, had to be '87 when Bill Madlock took out Tony Fernandez to break up a double play. The Tigers played the Blue Jays seven times in the last two weeks, beat them most of the games and then ... were embarrased by the upstart Minnesota Twins in the playoffs.

Each new season is a chance to make new history. Stairs was rumored to be coming to Detroit at the trade deadline, but the Tigers acquired Sean Casey instead. Stairs went to Texas, who just released him a couple days ago. The Tigers pounced, if for no other reason than they don't want to face Stairs who has always tore them up.

A win today would give the Tigers a sweep and that would feel good to all of us!

Cheers!!!
