Captain, First Mate, or Both?

What is it about the make-up of football and basketball coaches that they want to be BOTH the coach and the general manager, but baseball managers only want to coach and not work on the administrative side of things? It would seem that since Bill Parcells wants to be both the HEAD COACH and GENERAL MANAGER that Joe Torre would want to do both ...

What do you think loyal readers?

Thanks for tuning in on the Saturday mornin'.

I believe in baseball, scouting and talent evaluation and more importantly player development is much more unpredictable and time consuming. With the long season, a baseball manager does not have the time to do the "desk" job. In football and basketball (although not seen as much) the head coach is developing and evaluating the talent anyway. Also, there are many more different schemes in football, each coach is looking for different types of athletes. In baseball, talent wins.
