Clarkston's Own Dead at 48
Having lived in Clarkston in the late '70s, I thought it was cool when a guy from that town made it to the Major Leagues. Steve Howe was the pride of Clarkston when he won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in '80.
A few years later, though, he had cocaine problems. I remember it made my Grandma Morgan really upset when Howe blamed Clarkston for his drug problems. He had several comebacks and was suspended from MLB SEVEN times! I would be willing to bet that somehow George Steinbrenner still owes him some salary for as many times as he was a New York Yankee.
It's sad that he has passed away at 48.
