Hemingway … a therapy dog

Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Hemingway is a two-year old Chessie. He had the attitude we were looking for when we bought a new puppy a couple of years ago. We decided that we wanted to get a new dog who could be trained to provide a service to people. We wanted a dog that would have a job … a purpose. Hemingway has been trained as a therapy dog, and he is wonderful with kids.

When I would take him to school with me, he had a way of calming upset kids. I remember one boy who would come to my office just to see if Hemi was at school on any particular day. Lori has also had certain students check in in the morning just to see if he's with her. He is usually kind and gentle to anyone, but sometimes men wearing hats can confuse him.

We plan to continue to get him trained and eventually pass his Canine Good Citizen test which will — literally — open more doors for him. He's such a good boy. Of course, being only two, he can sometimes be a little bit much, but overall, the Hemster is quite the dude!
